Choose the state-law exam path that matches the work you plan to do.

Series 63, Series 65, and Series 66 are easy to confuse because all three are NASAA state-law exams administered by FINRA. The practical question is simpler: are you selling securities, giving investment advice, or doing both on a Series 7 track?

Which exam fits which path?

A simple way to choose

Take Series 63 when you sell securities

Series 63 is the compact state-law exam for broker-dealer agent activity. It is commonly paired with a product exam such as Series 6 or Series 7 when the role involves securities sales rather than paid advice.

Take Series 65 when advice is the point

Series 65 is the longer investment adviser law exam. It is usually the cleaner path when the role is built around advisory fees, portfolio advice, planning, fiduciary duties, and investment adviser representative registration.

Take Series 66 on a Series 7 track

Series 66 combines state agent and adviser law coverage. It can be efficient for Series 7 candidates, but the Series 7 relationship matters, so it is not the same standalone path as Series 65.

Do not choose only by exam length

Series 66 is not just a shorter Series 65

It is a combined path that assumes a Series 7 context. If you are not on that track, Series 65 may be the more relevant adviser exam.

Series 63 does not cover full adviser work

Series 63 is state agent law. If you plan to provide paid investment advice, compare Series 65 and Series 66 instead.
